Give Remix more tools

MCP connections let Remix use tools from a server you choose. Add and manage them from Settings → Remix → MCP connections. A connection is disabled until you test it and explicitly enable the discovered tools. Freestyle supports:
  • Local stdio servers — a command, its arguments, optional working directory, and environment values that run only on your computer.
  • Remote Streamable HTTP servers — HTTPS endpoints, or a loopback HTTP endpoint for local development.
  • Authentication — no auth, bearer token, custom headers, or the MCP OAuth authorization-code flow.

Connect a server

  1. Add a connection and choose Remote HTTP or Local stdio.
  2. Enter the endpoint or local command. Add each local command argument on its own line so paths and values with spaces stay intact. For a remote server, choose its authentication method.
  3. For OAuth, choose Connect account and finish in your browser. Return to Freestyle when the confirmation page says the server is connected.
  4. Choose Test connection to discover the server’s tools, then choose Enable when you want Remix to use them.

Privacy and safety

Commands, environment values, API keys, custom headers, OAuth tokens, and the live MCP connection remain in Freestyle’s local desktop server. Remix Cloud is given only each enabled tool’s name, description, and input shape so it can ask the desktop to run that tool. To finish that one request, the desktop returns a bounded, sanitized tool result to Remix Cloud. Cloud never receives your endpoint, credentials, or a remote MCP session. Tool output is bounded before it returns to Remix. Binary content is omitted and long text is truncated, which keeps a tool response from overwhelming the chat context. Remix can use up to 40 enabled MCP tools in one conversation. If your servers expose more, keep only the connections you need for the task enabled. Only connect local commands and remote MCP endpoints you trust. A connected server can receive the arguments Remix sends to one of its tools.
