Remix is the part of Freestyle for questions, research, drafting, and work that takes more than a single dictated sentence. It keeps the chat at the center of the desktop window and brings the relevant context alongside it.

Start a request

The default Remix hotkey is Fn + Control on macOS and Ctrl + Alt + E on Windows and Linux. Press it briefly to open the Remix surface, or hold it while you speak to send a request. Change the shortcut in Settings → Remix. When a response needs more room, use the expand control to continue in the Remix workspace. If it is already open, Freestyle focuses that existing window instead of creating another one.

Follow a request from the floating surface

The built-in Remix surface changes shape as a request moves from listening and transcribing to searching, thinking, and responding. While Remix is working, it keeps the current activity and the latest response line visible; use its expand control to open the same session in the workspace, or close it without ending the saved chat. If a request needs to read or change a local file, run a shell command, or save a download, Remix pauses in the expanded surface and shows exactly what it wants to do. Nothing runs until you choose Allow; declining is respected as the final answer for that action. This presentation is part of Freestyle itself. It is not an extension API: MCP servers can add tools to Remix, but they cannot replace or render their own floating pill.

Keep the conversation in view

The workspace has one primary job: keep your session readable. The chat stays in the center. A Context control at the top right reveals an optional rail that slides in from the right.

Notes

Scan recent notes and open a preview in the same card.

Brain

Browse relevant files and read a preview without leaving the chat.
Each card expands independently with View all. It does not navigate you to another tab or replace the conversation. Hide the rail whenever you want a wider chat, and Freestyle remembers that preference on the device.

Settings and connected apps

Use the Settings action to enter a settings-specific sidebar within the same workspace. This keeps navigation simple: use Back to app to return to the conversation.
  • Settings → Remix configures the Remix hotkey and related behavior.
  • Settings → Remix → Connected apps is where you connect services for Remix to use.
  • Settings → Remix → MCP connections is where you add trusted local MCP servers or remote HTTP MCP endpoints. See MCP connections for authentication and privacy details.
  • Settings → General → Models is where you configure transcription and cleanup models and any required API keys.
  • Settings → General → Companion controls the optional desktop companion.
Configuring a local cleanup model changes dictation cleanup. Remix continues to use its managed agent service; it does not silently switch to your cleanup model.

The companion

The companion is optional. When enabled, it can be repositioned for each display and shows lightweight activity without stealing focus from the app you are working in. Use Settings → General → Companion to show, wake, hide, or adjust its appearance.
